This is a small study and support group for people genuinely interested in exploring what the Buddha taught, and how we can integrate these teachings into our everyday life. You do not have to be Buddhist to attend.
As this is not a taught group, you will get the most out of coming along if you either already have some familiarity with basic Buddhist thought, or are willing to do some reading, watch DVDs or go to teachings on the subject. We can offer you support in doing this.
At present we meet in the informal, cosy living room of Buddhist nun Sister Zangmo. You are welcome to visit the group, and to come along each month if you find it helpful and inspiring.
On arriving, we unwind with refreshments for 10 minutes, after which the meeting begins. This opens with a short prayer and meditation to focus our intention and settle our busy minds.
Having agreed on a topic for exploration the previous meeting, each person brings something such as a reading or DVD clip, to share on that theme. This can be from any school of Buddhism.
We then have an informal discussion, sharing and reflection based on thoughts arising from exploring ways to integrate that evening's theme with everyday life.
The aim is not to debate the topic in an intellectual or academic way, but to honestly reflect on and share our own experience in daily living. Usually there are no teachings - the emphasis is mainly on group reflection and sharing.
The meeting ends with a dedication for the benefit of all beings.
Length of sessions is between 1½ – 2 hours depending on everyone’s preference. We usually each donate £1 in the pot, which goes towards other events such as inviting a teacher to our group.
